The mission of the AERB is to ensure the use of ionising radiation and nuclear energy in India does not cause undue risk to the health of people and the environment.

What to do in an emergency

DO NOT PANIC , REPORT

A situation is considered as an emergency when an event or accident occurred involves radiation hazard and has a potential to affect people around or contaminate the surrounding environment.

Radiation emergency

For facilities using ionizing radiation sources (smaller hazard compared to a nuclear reactor) an event has the potential to affect public, as these facilities are located in the public domain, an event has to be reported to the already specified agencies identified in the links given below:

Emergency contact nos.
Report a safety concern

For reporting an event in a radiation facility, eLORA facility can also be used by an already registered user.

For an emergency situation of leakage/spillage of radioactive materials or breach of containers of radioactive materials in a port, airport or on-road/railways, the event must be reported to the DAE emergency control room and all relevant regulatory authorities (including AERB).

The immediate actions during an emergency are supposed to be taken by the personnel already trained for handling radiation emergencies. Already trained personnel include disaster management personnel, security and police personnel, port authority personnel, doctors and people from district authorities etc. They are trained for handling such emergencies as a part of emergency preparedness measures. Important Actions to be taken during a radiological emergency are as follows:

  • Contain if possible
  • Cordon off if necessary
  • Report
  • Measure Radiation intensity
  • Decontaminate affected people
  • Provide medical aid to injured people
For emergency preparedness related information please see the following documents:

Nuclear emergency

Emergency in a nuclear fuel cycle facility including nuclear reactors are taken care of by the plant management as per emergency plan and depending on the type of event they communicate to various agencies involved in handling plant emergency, on-site emergency or off-site emergency. For a nuclear fuel cycle facility the site boundary (including the exclusion boundary where nobody stays) is more than a km away and in most cases of events the emergency is envisaged to be limited within plant boundary and not affect the on-site or off-site people/environment. However, for any of these emergencies (plant/on-site/off-site) the event has to be reported to AERB and DAE emergency control centers.
