Facilities using Sealed and Unsealed Radioactive Material

Use of unsealed and sealed radioisotopes in Research includes Medical (non-clinical applications), Agricultural, Industrial, University research etc.

Information Related to Regulations of Research Facilities using Unsealed and Sealed Radioisotopes

Radioisotopes in India can be procured and handled only by the users duly authorized by Radiological Safety Division (RSD), Atomic Energy Regulatory Board.

The Atomic Energy (Radiation Protection) Rules, 2004 [AE(RP)R-2004], promulgated under the Atomic Energy Act, 1962, provides the legal framework for the safe use and handling of radioactive isotopes. As per Rule 3 of AE (RP) R-2004 it is mandatory for all the Users of radioactive isotopes, to obtain requisite ‘Licence for Operation’ from AERB for handling radioactive isotopes.

To facilitate online submission of applications for various regulatory consents, AERB has launched e-governance application eLORA (e-Licensing of Radiation Applications) System. All the users of radioactive isotopes are required to obtain all the requisite consents from AERB through eLORA.
